High(ly Productive) Performance Computing
Since 1995, iCyt has provided quality products and innovative solutions to the global flow cytometry market. The iCyt flow cytometer system is used to count, sort, and analyze biological cells according to their characteristics. Designing the model for this system involved building a complex algorithm using Wolfram Research's Mathematica¨ software, the tool of choice for computational work at the frontiers of science, engineering, and technology. Because running these calculations was computationally time consuming, iCyt decided to employ a High Performance Computing (HPC) solution by using R Systems, a high-end computing resources provider. In consultation with iCyt and Wolfram Research, R Systems provided a computing cluster using Microsoft¨ Windows¨ HPC Server 2008, Microsoft's leading edge, 64-bit HPC software, and gridMathematica. By exploiting the integrated, instant parallel computing features of Mathematica on the Windows HPC resources provided by R Systems, iCyt's simulations completed within a significantly shorter timeframe, dramatically reducing the flow cytometer design cycle.

Breakthrough Performance for HPC
R Systems prides itself on providing government agencies, academic researchers, and commercial enterprises fast access to high- performance computing (HPC) resources. To accommodate two client requests in a short time frame, R Systems worked with Intel and Dell to upgrade a 288-node HPC cluster by deploying new customized Dell servers equipped with the Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series. The upgraded cluster helped a customer increase aggregate application performance by 200 percent while providing the density and energy efficiency to enable R Systems to further expand HPC resources.
